Building Construction 2
Project 1: Understanding Forces in Skeletal Structure

The Objective and Design Approach

Skeletal structure is one of the popular architectural approaches that were widely employed by the builders and architects in building designs nowadays. This assessment is to produce a skeletal tower with a minimum height of 30cm by using popsicle sticks without any gluing method. This is a golden opportunity to understand the working principles of skeletal structure as well as the load distributing system.

Our design approach would be focusing on how the design of a skeletal structure affects the efficiency of its load bearing ability. With the goal of getting efficiency as high as possible, a series of study models and model testing sessions were carried out throughout the exploration. Furthermore, we are focusing on the design strategies of the tower, for example, the form of the structure and the jointing of the connections, which would help to analyze the stability of tower in terms of structural system as well as the strain.

In conclusion, our main design concern is to achieve a high efficiency skeletal tower with a target of using minimal amount of popsicle sticks to achieve the maximum height of the tower as well as the ability to withstand maximum load, all in one, at the same time.

Project 2: Understanding Forces in Solid Structure and Surface Structure

The building chosen for this project is Phillips Exeter Academy Library by Louis Khan. A study on the solid and void of the building is conducted in order to understand the transmission of forces within the unique structure. Spaces and functions were also identified and a scale model is constructed with close resemblance to the actual building. The study and model is then compiled into a presentation in the form of an A5 booklet seen below.
